Course content
The Population Analysis for Policies and Programmes course is divided into four modules.
- Module 1 (Introduction to Demographic Analysis) provides an introduction to key areas of study in demography and the basic techniques and methods used by demographers. The first three sessions introduce global trends in population and the basic calculations required to study demography. The following sessions each take a particular demographic process and provide training on the ways in which this process is measured and analysed by demographers. Module 1 consists of 10 sessions.
- Module 2 (Demographic Data: Sources, Collection and Evaluation) consists of 6 sessions. These sessions introduce sources of demographic data, the methods used in collecting it, and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of the different sources.
- Module 3 (Demographic Analysis: Further Methods and Models) provides technical training in advanced methods of demographic analysis, including the use of model life tables, population dynamics and projections, and advanced fertility analysis. You should be aware that the techniques and concepts taught in module 3 represent a considerable increase in complexity compared to those taught in modules 1 and 2 and that most sessions contain a large amount of mathematical material. This may mean that completing each session takes longer than similar length sessions in previous modules. Module 3 consists of 10 sessions.
- Module 4 (Demographic Analysis: Applications and Extensions) extends the techniques introduced in the previous 3 modules and applies them to other topics relevant to demographic behaviour and health. Additional life table methods and applications are introduced as well as further fertility measures and the consideration of tempo and quantum. The measurement of sexual behaviour, unintended pregnancy, maternal mortality and the use of verbal autopsies are explained as well as measuring the burden of disease, impairment and disability.
