Summary

This session has introduced proportions, ratios and rates as important calculations which underlie many demographic measures. In relation to this, the concept of person-time at risk and the reasons why demographers use mid-year population as an estimate when calculating rates have also been outlined.

You should now also be familiar with the concepts of incidence and prevalence as measures of disease burden, be aware of how they are calculated, and able the relationship between the two.

Finally, the difference, and the relationship, between cohort and period data has been described, and it has been shown they can be represented graphically on a Lexis diagram.
