Aims
To describe the age and sex structure of populations, and their relationship with demographic events, common variations, and patterns of change over time.
Objectives
By the end of this session you should be able to
- Explain what is meant by an ‘age-sex structure’
- List the different measures which may describe population ageing
- Understand the relationship between demographic processes and the age structure
- Recognise and describe common age structures in the form of population pyramids
- Understand how the demographic transition is related to changes in the age structure
- Calculate sex ratios and explain what they mean
- Know the common pattern of sex ratios at different ages and development stages
