Age-sex structures – what are they?
To recap, the age-sex structure of a population is the distribution of the population by age and sex. It may be described in terms of absolute numbers or percentages. Age-sex structures are often depicted graphically in the form of a population pyramid

Population pyramids are double histograms which show the size (in numbers) or proportion of the population in each age group by sex. Males are always shown on the left and females are always shown on the right, with the youngest age groups at the bottom.
