Bongaarts’ aggregate model of the proximate determinants of fertility (cont.)
The inhibiting effect of the four main proximate determinants are measured in the model by four indices, which each range in value from 1 indicating no fertility inhibiting effect, to 0 indicating total fertility-inhibiting effect. Each index, by definition, equals the ratio of the fertility levels in the presence and in the absence of the inhibition caused by the corresponding intermediate fertility variable.
