Gross vs. net migration (cont.)

Exercise

Consider a set period of time, for example 10 years. During this period of time there will be a number of migration flows to and from a given area. At the end of the period of time we can discuss the in-migrants and out-migrants who are a product of migration flows during this time.

Interaction Which of the following statements is true?

a) The number of in-migrants at the end of the period is equal to the number of inward migration flows during the period.
b) The number of in-migrants at the end of the period is likely to be greater than the number of migration flows to the area during the period.
c) The number of out-migrants is likely to be equal to the number of in-migrants at the end of the period.
d) The numbers of in-migrants and out-migrants are likely to be less than the number of migration streams to or from that area, respectively

Please select an answer Incorrect. The number of in-migrants at the end of the period is likely to be less than the total migration flows during the period due to the effects of mortality. Incorrect. Due to mortality, the number of in-migrants at the end of the period is likely to be less than the total migration flows during the period. Incorrect. There is no reason for the number of in-migrants and the number of out-migrants to be equal, and the flows into and out of an area will be highly dependent on a number of different factors. Correct! Due to the effects of mortality, the number of in-migrants and out-migrants will be less than the number of migration flows to or from that area.

The following question is about the relationship between gross and net migration. Remember that gross migration is the total flow of migrants across a border (in both directions) and net migration is the difference between inward and outward flows.

Interaction With those definitions in mind, select the statement which is true.

a) A small volume of net migration always means there is little migration to or from an area.
b) A small volume of net migration in an area means that there is only a small amount of people leaving the area.
c) Zero net migration means that the age and sex structure of the area is unchanging.
d) If there is no international migration, for the country as a whole the internal net migration will be zero.

Please select an answer Incorrect. A small volume of net migration means that the inward and outward migration flows are similar. This may result from small or large migration streams to and from an area, or any amount in between. Incorrect. A small volume of net migration means that the inward and outward migration flows are similar. This may result from small or large migration streams to and from an area, or any amount in between. Incorrect. Net migration refers to the volume of migration to and from a given area, and gives no information about the age or sex of migrants. Correct! If there is no international migration, the inmigration and outmigration between different areas of the same country will be equal and net migration will equal zero.
