Aims
To provide an overview of population censuses, vital registration systems, sample registration systems and population registers as sources of demographic data.
Objectives
By the end of this session you should be able to:
- Explain what a census is and the type of data it provides
- Understand the difference between de facto and de jure censuses
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of censuses
- Describe what is meant by vital registration, and list the advantages of a fully functioning vital registration system
- Understand the type of information collected during vital registration, and why it is collected
- List some of the qualities which are required to make a vital registration system fit for purpose
- Give examples of systems for measuring vital events in the absence of vital registration
- Explain what a sample registration is, where they are found and why they are used
- Explain what a population register is, where they are found and why they are used
