Introduction
Longitudinal data are those derived from repeated measurements on individuals who have been studied for a period of time. There are several different methods for collecting longitudinal data. This session will introduce the main methods used in demographic longitudinal studies and will note how these relate to the approaches used in other disciplines such as epidemiology.
Longitudinal data are used to research many different subjects. Their use is not confined to demography. For example, they are used in epidemiology, genetics, economics and ecology. Many key insights into health and mortality have resulted from studies which generated longitudinal data.
