How to conduct a simple random sample

The steps in conducting a simple random sample are listed below.

  1. Identify or draw up a sampling frame.
  2. Number each unit on the list in sequence from 1 to N (where N is the size of the study population).
  3. Choose a random selection of the required number of units by:
    1. Using random number tables
    2. OR

    3. Using random numbers generated by a calculator or a computer programme (for example, Excel).
