The following map shows the percentage of DALYs due to non-communicable disease in 2010. It emphasises the striking contrasts that exist across the world in how far countries have progressed through the epidemiologic transition.

In parts of Africa and in Haiti, non-communicable diseases still cause less than 20 per cent of loss of healthy life. In most of the rest of the world, in contrast, they now account for more than half the burden of disease. In most high-income countries, non-communicable disease accounts for more than 80 per cent of DALYs.
