Aims
To introduce the common ways of measuring fertility in a population and describe the utility of each type of measure.
Objectives
After working through this session you should be able to:
- appreciate the various common measures of fertility and the advantages and disadvantages of each
- understand why the measurement of fertility needs to be approached from different angles
- calculate common measures of fertility from tabulated data
- appreciate the difference between period and cohort measures of fertility
