Aims
To introduce the concept of a framework of proximate determinants of fertility to understand the mechanism through which social, economic, cultural and environmental factors influence fertility.
Objectives
After working through this module you should be able to:
- Articulate differences between proximate and distal determinants of fertility
- Explain the concept of proximate determinants and Bongaarts' model
- Understand variations in level of each inhibiting factors of fertility in different settings
- Critique the main limitations of the model
