Aims and objectives

Aims

To introduce the concept of the Life Table and deal with the various ways in which it is used, including the construction of the tables as far as is required for straightforward survival analysis: that is up to the formation of the synthetic cohort (l_x) column.

Objectives

After working through this module you should be able to:

• recognise different presentations of life tables and understand their utility as a form of survival analysis
• understand the different starting points for the construction of life tables
• construct a table, as far as the l_x column
• make use of the l_x column of the table for simple calculations
